26 September 2007 – Brandenburger Tor

Hello, my name is Richard Schlomann, I’m 19 years old and I am working in the Novo Nordisk Youth Panel for Germany. During my time with the Changing Diabetes Bus, I would like to help in particular to answer questions from adolescents and their parents about life with diabetes. I would like to communicate experiences from my life and thus help others to cope with the challenge of diabetes.

In Germany, we have about 6,000,000 people with diabetes and an additional high number of people who do not yet know that they are suffering from diabetes. The number of juvenile type 2 diabetes is increasing considerably, which I consider to be particularly alarming.

On the first day of the tour in Berlin, we were parking in front of the Brandenburger Tor, many interested people came to the bus and asked for information. A “walking day“ took place nearby, whose participants wanted to have their blood sugar checked. All those who passed  were very interested, many people asked questions, which I tried to answer. I was able to have many interesting discussions with parents of juvenile diabetics but also with other young people with diabetes themselves.

There were also many people passing by who were not interested at all in the subject of diabetes, we often heard that they are not suffering from diabetes and won’t get it and those people went on.

Many tourists used the bus for a little break as well, the food and the many different tests and checks attracted a lot of people, too.

I think we were able to extend the knowledge about diabetes in most visitors.

It was not only the good weather that contributed to an overall great day at the Brandenburger Tor.
