28 September - 9 October 2008

The Changing Diabetes Bus World Tour 2006-2008 started in Copenhagen on 13 September 2006. It has already visited various countries across five continents and visited Spain from 28 September to 9 October.

Diabetes facts in Spain

In Spain, the prevalence of diabetes is 7.5%. More than 2,500,000 people suffer from the disease and it is estimated that by 2025 this figure will exceed to 3,200,000.

Risk tests

Choice of lifestyle plays an important role in preventing type 2 diabetes. Globally, 90% of all cases of diabetes are type 2, which is often directly related to obesity and low levels of physical activity. For this reason, the Changing Diabetes Bus Tour in Spain offered ‘Find risks tests’ to all visitors, who wished to fill out a questionnaire. The test included B.M.I and waist measurements.

Diabetes lectures were carried out in a tent next to the bus by diabetes educators. Focus was put on the importance of healthy eating and general tips on lifestyle habits that can prevent diabetes.  In addition, ongoing activities such as a Mini-gym (body-track, indoor-cycle) and Wii™ Fit (table of exercise) were offered to the visitors.

During the visit in Spain, the Changing Diabetes Bus attracted over 9,300 visitors, and 2,027 ‘Find risk tests’ were carried out.

The event was organised in partnership with the Spanish Diabetes Foundation.
